Mine That Bird Preps For Belmont Stakes Win - 05-20-09
May 20 - Since his stunning victory in the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, followed by a close second place in last Saturday's Preakness Stakes, superb gelding Mine That Bird is gaining news fans across the U.S. everyday, and now his trainer Bennie 'Chip' Wooley is prepping him for the Belmont Stakes.
Just one month ago, Mine That Bird barely registered on the horseracing radar. But after his incredible displays of speed and stamina in two of America's most famous and important races, he is now being closely monitored by horseracing fans across the nation. Wooley too has been firmly thrust into the spotlight.
Well-known for his Stetsen, blue jeans, cowboy boots and crutches (he injured his leg in a motorcycle accident a few months ago), Wooley has garnered a new respect in the horseracing world. And come June 6 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, all eyes will be on him and his charge at the Belmont Stakes.
Although Rachel Alexandra's victory in the Preakness put the U.S. Triple Crown out of contention for this year, a victory by Mine That Bird in the 1 1/2 mile $1 million Belmont Stakes (Gr 1) would still be an incredible achievement for the New Mexico gelding. As such, Wooley has already started prep work.
Yesterday at Churchill Downs Racecourse in Kentucky, the trainer put Mine That Bird through his paces in preparation for the Belmont Stakes. He had the gelding jog 1 mile. Said Wooley, ' He's really bouncing and animated and I'm real happy with him. He didn't lose too much weight in the race (the Preakness).'
Although the trainers of most of the runners in the Preakness Stakes are still letting their charges recuperate, for Wooley it was important to get Mine That Bird back on the track as soon as possible. 'He likes to travel. He likes to train. He rests, he eats, and he drinks his water. He's a special individual,' said Wooley.
Other runners expected to start in the Belomont Stakes include Charitable Man, Chocolate Candy, Dunkirk, Flying Private, Miner's Escape, Mr. Hot Stuff, Summer Bird and possibly Luv Gov. The connections of Rachel Alexandra have still not confirmed whether they'll enter the champion filly in the big race or not.
Regardless of who enters the race we feel that Mine That Bird is ideally suited to the race course and distance, and he should win. Feel free to have a massive bet on him and then remember to thank us after.
