Owner Profile |
Mike Pegram |
Michael E. Pegram was born in
Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1952, and is one of the most renowned
thoroughbred racehorse owners in the United States today. Growing up in
Indiana, Pegram used to attend the races at Ellis Park Racecourse as
well as Churchill Downs Racecourse across the state border in Kentucky.
This is reportedly where the horseracing bug bit him.
The first horses that Pegram owned were quarter horses in partnership
with his father. The pair also owned a few McDonald's franchises in
Washington state. Later, Pegram relocated the business to Arizona, and
today is reported to own 22 McDonald's. During the late 1980s he met
well-known racehorse trainer Bob Baffert, and switched to owning
thoroughbreds. |

According to reports, from a young age it was always a dream of Pegram's
to own a Kentucky Derby winner, and thanks to Bob Baffert and top-rated
jockey Kent Desormeaux, that dream came true in 1998 with Real Quiet. In
the same year, Real Quiet also won the Preakness Stakes.
Pegram has since enjoyed much success as a thoroughbred racehorse owner
and has celebrated wins in such auspicious races as the Breeders' Cup
Juvenile Fillies and the Kentucky Oaks. In 2007 and 2008 he celebrated
victory in the Breeders' Cup Sprint with Midnight Lute. Pegram is reported to
have between 20 and 25 thoroughbreds currently in training with Bob
Baffert. |
