Mike Bass |
Mike Bass was born on February 2,
1945 in South Africa.
He went to school in the Cape, and attended Stellenbosch University
where he earned his diploma in Agricultural Technology.
After qualifying, he traveled overseas. When he returned to South
Africa, he opened his first business in Muizenberg. He trained 35 horses
at the Western Province Riding School, 15 of which competed in the
amateur races at the Cape Hunt and Polo club. He sold the business after
6 years and moved to Broadlands Stud farm where he was the apprentice
for Pat O'Neil for 2 years.

In 1976 he took out his trainers license and started training in Sungari
Lodge in Milnerton. He achieved his first Grade 1 victory 4 years later
with Cracker Lilly in the Clairwood Winter Handicap. He has now been in
the training business for over 30 years and is one of SA's top horse
racing trainers. At the time of writing,
Bass has had 2 350 career wins out of 12 850 races. Mike Bass trains
Pocket Power, arguably the top older racehorse in South Africa over the
past two years (2007/08).
He has won both the J&B Met and the July Handicap with this horse. |
