Trainer Profile

Mike Bass
Mike Bass was born on February 2, 1945 in South Africa.

He went to school in the Cape, and attended Stellenbosch University where he earned his diploma in Agricultural Technology.

After qualifying, he traveled overseas. When he returned to South Africa, he opened his first business in Muizenberg. He trained 35 horses at the Western Province Riding School, 15 of which competed in the amateur races at the Cape Hunt and Polo club. He sold the business after 6 years and moved to Broadlands Stud farm where he was the apprentice for Pat O'Neil for 2 years.

Mike Bass
In 1976 he took out his trainers license and started training in Sungari Lodge in Milnerton. He achieved his first Grade 1 victory 4 years later with Cracker Lilly in the Clairwood Winter Handicap. He has now been in the training business for over 30 years and is one of SA's top horse racing trainers. At the time of writing, Bass has had 2 350 career wins out of 12 850 races. Mike Bass trains Pocket Power, arguably the top older racehorse in South Africa over the past two years (2007/08).

He has won both the J&B Met and the July Handicap with this horse.
