Trainer Profile |
Luca Cumani |
Luca Cumani was born
in Italy on April 7 1949.
His mother was a champion jockey and his father a champion trainer, so
it stands to reason that Cumani was soon to follow in their footsteps.
He started out as a jockey but soon decided that training was his first
love. On deciding that Newmarket was THE place to be in the racing
world, Cumani moved there to work for Henry Cecil, the 10 time champion
trainer.
Cumani started his own training concern at Bedford House in 1976 and his
star has continued to shine ever since. By the time he had been in
business for 10 years, he had already had 12 Group 1 winners, in 5
countries. This figure has risen to 55 at the time of being published.
He set his sights on the international racing area once he had claimed
most of the better known domestic races and he has won Group 1 races in
both Japan and Hong Kong with champion mounts Falbrav and Alkaased.

He has become known in
the industry as a mentor to both jockeys and assistant trainers. Frankie
Dettori, Jimmy Fortune and Nicky Mackay are all champion apprentices who
were mentored by Cumani, and James Toller, Marco Botti and David Simcock
are some of the better known current trainers who spent time with Cumani
in their formative years.
Cumani has trained many high profile horses including Barathea who won
the Breeders Cup in 1994 |
