Louella Stud Receive Lifetime Achievement Award - 02-18-08
February 18 - The latest UK horse racing news is that at the recent British Breeding Breeders Awards world-renowned Louella Stud received the Merial Meritoire Lifetime Achievement award. This award is given to worthy recipients in recognition of exceptional contributions to sport horse breeding.
The Merial Meritoire Lifetime Achievement award was accepted by Lucy Gillingham. She said that they were thrilled and totally surprised by the award. She said it was also a fairly sad moment as the award came very close to the second anniversary of her grandfather Louis Massarella's death. She said she knows that he would have been very proud of the achievement.
The late Louis Massarella founded Louella Stud in 1934. Massarella was uniquely capable of spotting potential stallions, and was a shrewd businessman to boot.
Louella stallions have sired horses successful in all disciplines, most notably dressage, show jumping, racing and eventing. Louella stallions are well known the world over having been exported to numerous countries in Europe, to Australia, New Zealand, America and Asia. So many stallions have been exported to Ireland that the Irish Field named Massarella the "stallion man of the century".
The stud, located in Leicestershire is on 130 acres. There is stabling for 57 horses, 2 indoor schools as well as a horse walker. They currently have 12 brood mares and the progeny are generally sold as foals. Gillingham said that they do keep some of the fillies so that their best bloodlines are retained. They have also just purchased 2 thoroughbred mares in order to introduce new blood. The have 8 stallions standing stud this season, amongst them Nomadic Way and Criminal Law.
