Legendary Texas Trainer Dies - 05-17-08

May 17 - Jim Bausch has passed away at the age of 70. He was born in Rapid City and took part in the rodeo circuit before moving to thoroughbred training. Bausch trained many first class horses: First Dominion, Marked for Promise and Trick Bag, who had 110 starts before he retired in October last year, amongst others.

Vice President of racing at Sam Houston Park, Eric Johnston, says that his death is a huge loss for the entire Texan racing industry. He said that Bausch was an esteemed owner and trainer and he supported their racing program in any way he could.

Al Grice who owns many of the racehorses Bausch trained said "Right from the start, we became close friends, I would come by the barn in the mornings and we would talk about everything from racing to politics. When it was time to retire Trick Bag, it was Jim that made sure we found him a good home."

Others share similar sentiments of a good man who will be sorely missed. Bayard Gilbert a jockey agent said that Bausch was a class act and very highly respected, not only as a trainer but as a very good friend. Jorge Guzman who rode for Bausch says that he always wanted to do his best for him. Eguard Tejera who was the top rider at Retama Park last season said that Bausch was a very special man and like a father to him. He was always very encouraging and always asked for his input on important decisions.

Bausch won the the title of leading owner of the Sam Houston meet in both 2004 and 2006. He is survived by his partner of 10 years, trainer Robin Powers and 4 children.
