Hollywood Gold Cup 2009

Hollywood Gold Cup 2009

Large Field Expected in Hollywood Gold Cup - 07-08-09

July 8 - So far thirteen runners are expected to start in Saturday's $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (Gr 1) for three-year-olds and up at Hollywood Park in California, which, without any real standouts judging by the respective weight assignments, could turn out to be a sports betting fan's dream race.

Here punters will have to put on their thinking caps to produce some winning picks and bets. Of the sizeable field there are, however, a couple of thoroughbreds definitely worth checking out. One is Parading, who chalked up two notable wins in the spring that may well give him a slight edge on Saturday.

The six-year-old's first victory was in the $150,000 Ben Ali Stakes (Gr 3) at Keeneland Race Course on April 19 in Lexington, Kentucky, where he delivered a solid performance, and his second was in the $250,000 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 16 in Baltimore, Maryland, where he did the same.

Despite carrying one of the top weights of 119 pounds on Saturday, Parading should be well-backed. Of course, in the 1 1/4 mile race he'll have to overcome five-year-old Bullsbay, who impressed by winning the $150,000 Alysheba Stakes (Gr 3) on May 1 at Churchill Downs Racecourse in Louisville, Kentucky.

And then there is six-year-old Champs Elysees, who came pretty close to winning the coveted $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. In the race, Champs Elysees showed a swift turn-of-foot, but was just not fast enough to overcome dazzling race winner, Einstein.

Another Hollywood Gold Cup runner that may be worth a wager is talented four- year-old filly, Life Is Sweet, who delivered a winning turn in the $300,000 Santa Margarita Handicap (Gr 1) at Santa Anita Park on March 14. With her five pound sex allowance, she'll be carrying the top weight of 123 pounds.

But despite this, her respected trainer John Shirreffs is reportedly confident in the filly's chances. The other runners expected in Saturday's Hollywood Gold Cup include Tres Borrachos, Informed, Dakota Phone, Song at Navarone, Mast Track, Awesome Gem, Big Booster, Rail Trip and Magnum.
