Kinane Rides Big Double In Hong Kong - 04-29-07
April 29 - The Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Hong Kong Mile attracted some of the world's best horses, but it was the local nags that finished on top. The real story, however, was that Mick Kinane rode both winners to complete an incredible big race double at Sha Tin.
First up was the Mile where Kinane piloted Able One to a facile win. The race was run at a very slow pace which proved the undoing of the race favourites Good Ba Ba (who finished 5th) and South African challenger Linngari who ran 6th.
The main race on the card was the Cup, and Hong Kong cheered as local runner Viva Pataca repelled two of the best horses in the world Vengeance Of Rain and Admire Moon. South African connections were again left with nothing as Sushisan and Oracle West finished 5th and 6th respectively.
Just to show how far South African horsemen have come on the world scene - no less than 5 of the jockeys in the big race were from South Africa. The grand old man Felix Coetzee was joined by Delpech, Dougie Whyte, Waichong Marwing, and Kevin Shea.
SA trainers at Sha Tin on a glorious day for world horse racing were Mike DeKock, Tony Millard, and Herman Brown.
