Kentucky Oaks Betting Suggests Zazu Is The Value - 05-05-11

May 5 - The 2011 Kentucky Oaks has a wide open look to it and with thirteen runners entered luck will play a part in determining the winner. However, one horse looks great betting value, and that's Zazu.

Zazu is currently on offer at 4/1 but her West Coast form suggests that she should be hard to beat. The grey Tapit filly is owned by the Mosses, they of Zenyatta fame, and they will have mixed feelings when they watch her run at Churchill Downs tomorrow. On the one hand they won the Kentucky Derby here in a great upset in 2005 with Giacomo. On the other, this was the venue where hearts were broken as Zenyatta came up a head short of retiring undefeated in last year's Breeders' Classic.

But life goes on and now the talk is about Zazu, who also likes to close late, and who has earned excellent Beyer figures in the lead up to this race. Her back-to-back 89s at Santa Anita in an ongoing battle with Turbulent Descent seem both genuine and a cut above the rest of this field.

The favorite is another grey Tapit filly named Joyful Victory. She will be ridden by Mike Smith, the same jockey who received so much criticism for that losing ride on Zenyatta. It's a small world for sure. Joyful Victory is on the upgrade but has never run faster than an 83 Beyer. Not good enough in this spot, although she jumps from post 1 and has enough speed to make her presence felt.

The biggest danger to Zazu could well be Team Valor's recent purchase Summer Soiree. In a Gr3 race last time out she ran a 93 Beyer, but had things all her own way on the lead. If she gets away from the pack again she could easily win, but it seems unlikely that it will be that easy this time. She is on the upgrade, however, and the Zazu-Summer Soiree Exacta is the bet for us on the day.
