Kentucky Derby Heroine Winning Colors Dies - 02-20-08
February 20 - Hall of famer, Winning Colors has died this week at the age of 23. She was well known in the racing world as only 3 fillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby. Winning Colors was the most recent winner. She won the Kentucky Derby in 1988 against champion runners Forty Niner and Risen Star.
Winning Colors was trained by D. Wayne Lukas and ridden by Gary Stevens in the first Kentucky Derby victory for both Hall Of Famers. The death of Winning Colors has hit Jeff Lukas, assistant to his father in 1987 very hard. When contacted by telephone on Tuesday Lukas had the following to say about Winning Colors, "She was always a big, tall, long-striding filly - an extremely well-structured individual. The thing about her was just controlling her. She was not the kind that would easily settle down. We had to keep her from doing too much, because she tried to put a lot into her training that wasn't necessary?
They were concerned about her on the day of the Kentucky Derby as it was difficult to get her to settle down, but Lukas managed to get her to the racecourse quietly and phoned his father to say "Dad, don't worry about the Spinster. She loves this track and she will run her race."
She ran her race indeed and was inducted into the racing hall of fame in 2000.
South African horse racing was stunned by the loss of one of the best trainers of sprinters that the country had seen in the past two decades when Buddy Maroun passed away in Argentina. Maroun was only 51 years old and his death is a tragic loss for the sport.
