History |
Kempton Park racecourse, set on about 84 hectares was the brainchild of SH Hyde, a 19th century businessman. He came across Kempton Manor and Park whilst he was out for a carriage drive in the countryside. He leased the grounds and the Kempton Park racecourse opened 6 years later in 1878.
Both National Hunt racing and Flat racing are held at Kempton Park racecourse. The King George VI Chase which is held on the 26th of December each year is without doubt the most famous race held at the course. |

Facilities |
Racing at Kempton Park stopped for just under a year when renovations were done on site.
The oval all-weather Polytrack opened in 2006 and is either 8 or 10 furlongs in distance (depends on which bend is used for the race; inner or outer). The 1.5 mile National Hunt circuit is almost completely flat with a 220 yard run-in.
Floodlighting was installed which allows racing to take place in nearly all weather conditions and light levels.
There is a market each Thursday at the venue, and an Antique market makes Kempton Park its home on the second and last Tuesdays of each month. There are also a wide variety of bars, restaurants and conferencing facilities at the racecourse as well as tote betting areas.
