Just Jenda Wins Monmouth Beach Stakes - 05-31-10

May 31 - In Sunday's $100,000 Monmouth Beach Stakes at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, four-year-old filly Just Jenda cruised to victory over 7 other three-year-olds and up over 1 mile and 70 yards, her third straight win? at Monmouth.

Of the 11-race card, the Monmouth Beach Stakes was the feature and as it turned out the race that delivered the most excitement. The reason being Just Jenda, the second favourite, and a filly who chalked up a two stakes wins at Monmouth last year.

Trained and co-owned by Cindy Jones and her husband Larry, Just Jenda started yesterday's Monmouth Beach Stakes from post 5 and despite a small stumble, was soon righted by jockey Terry Thompson, who then slotted her in not far off the leaders.

There she stayed for most of the race, in about fourth, until coming into the final turn Thompson moved her against the rail and asked her for more. She responded by passing pacesetter McVictory on the inside, not slowing until she had crossed the line first.

McVictory crossed the line 1 1/2 lengths behind her who in turn led Ask the Moon home in third. The victory proved that this is the ideal class for the filly, who struggled to keep up with Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom Stakes (Gr 1) at Oaklawn Park in April.

Said Thompson after the race, 'We were in a great spot today. She [Just Jenda] sat in mid-pack, right behind the pace, and was a little on the bit heading to the three-eighths. Luckily, the leader tired and came off the rail, and we were able to take the spot.'

The win was Just Jenda's seventh from 15 starts. She covered the course in a time of 1:42 and paid $5.40, $3.40 and $2.80. For the connections of race favourite, Luna Vega, it was a race to forget after the 5-year-old mare failed to match her previous form.
