Jockey Kicks Horse - 06-26-07
June 26 - Victor Molina got mad and then he got even. In front of many astounded punters who were watching the races from Philadelphia Park and either betting online or at an off-track facility (a few were even at the track in question), the jockey kicked his horse in the gut.
Molina has been suspended for one month and fined $1000, which many in horse racing consider excessive for assaulting a horse, which after all weighs in at nine times the jockey's weight and can obviously dish out kicks a lot better than the kicks it receives, even if they are in the tummy.
The horse in question (not named as is the case with most assault victims) reared in the stall and hit the jockey in the chest with his head. The jockey reacted regrettably, and it is estimated that his eye for an eye worldview will cost him around $15k in potential lost earnings.
This sort of thing happens in horse racing all the time, according to those interviewed in Philadelphia, home of course of the 'Philly Cheese Steak'. They don't just eat horses in France, apparently, but is cruelty to a dumb animal necessary?
The real culprit of course is television, the Internet, and the fact that so many people now bet on races that are far afield. In the old days no one watched the third from Philadelphia Park on a Monday or any other day, and a jockey could kick his horse as many times as he liked, some times even while riding the animal.
Alas we live in an age of accountability, for small crimes anyway, and if this cautionary tale prevents one more equine attack by an angry little man then surely we will all sleep easier?
