Jockey Kerrin McEvoy Chalks up 1000th Win - 06-30-09

June 30 - While there are thousands of jockeys around the world who are capable of riding horses from the starting gate to the finish line, there are relatively few that win, or at least finish in the top spots, more than they lose, one of which is Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy who just chalked up his 1000th win.

McEvoy reached his impressive milestone today (Tuesday, June 30) in the 2400m AJC Convention Centre Handicap at Sydney's Rosehill Gardens Racecourse aboard English-bred stayer, Bright Mind. Said the visibly pleased jockey after the race, 'It's a relief to have reached 1000. Now it's on to the next 1000.'

Since he started racing many years ago on a dusty outback track in Ceduna, South Australia, McEvoy has come a very long way and is now a household name for racing fans and horseman across Australia. He first cemented his name in Aussie horseracing circles when he won the coveted Melbourne Cup in 2002.

What made his Melbourne Cup victory so memorable is that he had only recently completed his apprenticeship before riding Brew across the line first in the massive Melbourne race at Flemington Racecourse, which is considered by many in horseracing circles to be the biggest and most important race in Australia.

Since that epic day, a second Melbourne Cup win has eluded McEvoy, although in 2002 he managed to steer Godolphin-owned Beekeeper to a respectable third in the big race. The young jockey then went to Dubai where he and champion jockey Frankie Dettorie triumphed on behalf of Godolphin for two years.

In 2008 McEvoy returned to Australia, remaining loyal to Godolphin owner, Sheikh Mohammed, by riding for Darley Australia under the guidance of respected trainer, Peter Snowden, out of Sydney. However, it was riding for top Rosehill Gardens trainer, Chris Waller, today when he cracked his 1000th win.

Said McEvoy, 'It's good to get it done and if I couldn't do it on one of Darley's then to win on this horse is the next best thing. I've won a few races on him now, and he just keeps on going. While I'll never forget today's victory, neither will I forget my first ever win on the dirt track at Ceduna for Butch Hebberman.'
