Jockey Greg Cheyne Gets Lucrative Sponsorship - 05-21-09

May 21 - As of this month (May 2009), South African jockey Greg Cheyne has picked up a desirable sponsorship from leading South African winery and stud farm group, Avontuur Estate, with the objective of further promoting the operation's visibility locally and internationally.

Said Avontuur Estate general manager Pippa Mickleburg, 'We selected Greg for the sponsorship as a result of his impressive track record in South African horse racing where he is currently lying third on the SA National Jockey log. He has a reputation for being one of the hardest-working jockeys in the country.'

In the 2007/2008 racing season, Cheyne was named Champion Jockey in the Eastern Cape, and honor he also garnered for himself in the 2005/2006 season. As one of the few South African jockeys that owns horses, in January this year he won the Paddock Stakes (Gr 1) on his own charge, Emblem of Liberty.

The talented rider is expected to make his Avontuur Estate sponsorship debut on May 30 at Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg at Golden Horse Sprint day, which will feature many of the Estate's top young thoroughbreds. These include multiple winner Villandry, notable colt Vacherin, and lightening fast Valiant.

All three could go up against each other in the 1200m Gold Medallion (Gr 1), while worthy Avontuur Estate fillies My Kazzie and Valeta could do some damage in the 1200m Allan Robertson Fillies Championship (Gr 1). Founded in the late 1980s, Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm is renowned for using leading sires.

Said Cheyne about the new sponsorship deal, 'I look forward to a successful partnership with Avontuur Estate and will do everything in my power to promote the brand, both on the stud and wine side. I got into horse racing because I love sport in general and wanted to make my living in racing as a professional.'

And according to Mickleburg another reason the jockey was selected to carry the Avontuur Estate brand is his love and understanding of good wine. 'Greg is also a serious wine lover with an above-than-average knowledge of the fruits of the vine and will be an ambassador for that side of the business as well,' she said.
