Jay Peg Blows Field Away in Singapore - 05-22-08

May 22 - On Sunday at the Kranji Race Track in Singapore, South African 4-year-old thoroughbred race horse, Jay Peg, and his jockey, Anton Marcus, did themselves and South Africa proud by winning the prestigious Singapore Airlines International Cup 2000m $3 million Group 1 race.

Home to the Singapore Turf Club, Kranji is a venue that attracts some of the world's best horse racing and Sunday's event was no different, as Jap Peg ultimately dispatched 15 rivals with a gutsy and nail-biting performance, that put a broad smile on the face of trainer, Herman Brown.

Carefully prepared at the hands of Brown, Jay Peg was always the horse to beat. This was reflected in the day's betting, particularly following his convincing win in last March's $5 million Dubai Duty Free, and excellent showing again 7 weeks later in Singapore.

However, for this event, punters were also keeping  a close eye on local favorite Chevron, ridden by the talented Saimee Jumaat. Chevron was touted as the horse to give Jay Peg a good run for his money and, true to form, when the race finally got underway, it was soon Chevron leading the way.

While Marcus accelerated Jay Peg quickly out of the starting gate, Chevron was already hugging the barrier, soon building on his 600m lead at a fast clip. Even down the backstraight, Chevron looked like a horse possessed, with Jay Peg churning up the turf in distant second.

However, by the 800m mark, Jay Peg accompanied by Balius, Cosmo Bulk and Onceuponatime, began to reel in the leader, when Chevron started showing signs of fatigue. Not long after, Jay Peg regained the lead which he kept for the remainder of the race, despite an impressive last ditch effort from local horse, Recast.

After the race, a visibly flushed Marcus was thrilled at having 'delivered the goods' yet again on foreign soil.

'After winning in Dubai, the fairytale continues. I was feeling a little exhausted at the furlong but Jay Peg was still going strongly. It just shows that you can put him just about anywhere in a race, proving that he is anything but one-dimensional,' he said.

Herman Brown was equally ecstatic, and was quick to sing the praises of Marcus as well as thank the Singapore Turf Club for their hospitality.

'This race was fantastic for us, especially after our win in Dubai. I knew this was a good race to focus on. I was nervous before he race given how much Jay Peg was sweating, but sure enough Anton stepped up and rode a fantastic race,' he said.

This victory at the Singapore Airlines International Cup means that Jay Peg has racked up an impressive $6.1 million for owners Nicholas Shirtliff, Paul Loomes, Etienne Braun and Selwyn Marcus.
