The Japan Cup's purse is ?533 million (approximately $4.6m), making it one of the richest races in the World Racing Series. The Japan Cup is an invitational event only, the promoters deciding that local horses needed the chance to go head to head with international horses of high caliber.

The Tokyo Racecourse is a left-handed turf course offering magnificent views of Mt Fuji. Built in 1933, the inaugural Japan Cup race was limited to those horses that had been trained in North America, India, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. A 5 year old mare, Mairzy Doates, won the race by a full length ahead of Frost King with another American horse, The Very One coming in third. No horse has ever won the Japan Cup more than once.
The Tokyo Racecourse is situated in Tokyo, Japan and has approximately 13 700 seats -- and a capacity for about 22 300 horse racing fans.
