J J The Jet Plane Grounded in South Africa - 07-22-10

July 22 - South African horse racing fans looking forward to watching top locally-bred thoroughbred J J The Jet Plane strut his stuff in Hong Kong, will be disappointed to learn his connections have decided to keep him grounded on African soil.

Said a spokesperson for Lucky Houdalakis stable which owns the 6-year-old gelding, 'We decided not to put him through the travel overseas. The owners felt that he'd had enough and we want to enjoy him here where we can all watch his races.'

In his most recent race, the R600,000 Mercury Sprint (Gr 1) over 1200m at Clairwood Racecourse in Cape Town on Sunday, J J The Jet Plane proved yet again why he is such an exemplary horse by beating 16 other runners to cross the line first.

His tremendous performance on the weekend fueled speculation as to whether he would be shipped off to Hong Kong, but his connections made the call. He will more than likely see out the remainder of his career in front of South African racegoers.

Said co-owner Henry Du Preez, 'We haven't decided on plans as yet - that will be up to Lucky [Houdalakis] - but we have been thinking of going to Cape Town in January for the Cape Flying Championship.'

But J J The Jet Plane is no stranger to travel. After completing a noteworthy campaign in Europe recently, he returned to South Africa and achieved what few 'returning' SA thoroughbreds horses have - he proceeded to win not one but two Gr 1 races.

Horsemen and racing fans alike across the country appreciate that it was no small feat to maintain and even improve J J The Jet Plane's form following his lengthy European campaign, which is testament to the abilities of his trainer, Lucky Houdalakis.

As such, it's not surprising that J J The Jet Plane is the current odds on favourite to win the 2010 SA Horse of the Year title.
