August 19 - At the glittering Equus Awards in Johannesburg last week, South Africa's best horses, trainers, jockeys and owners were recognized in a variety of categories, but the biggest award, the South African Horse of the Year, went to Irish Flame.

Winner of the epic South African Derby (Gr 1), 3-year-old colt Irish Flame was also named Champion Three Year Colt/Gelding and Champion Stayer. So it was probably no surprise when his top-rated trainer, Mike de Kock, was named Champion Trainer.

In fact, de Kock 'cleaned up' at this year's Equus Awards by winning a record nine awards including Champion Two Year Old Filly (Mahooba), Champion Three Year Old Filly (Here to Win), Champion Older Filly/Mare (Mother Russia) and Champion Middle Distance Horse (Bold Silvano). In addition, one of the horses de Kock trains (Lizard's Desire) earned its breeder, A.J. Boshoff, the Breeder Award For Exceptional International Achievement.
