Iris De Balme In Surprise National Victory - 04-21-08
April 21 - 8-year-old Iris De Balme pulled off an amazing win at the Scottish Grand National at Ayr this past Saturday.
He was quoted at the longshot odds of 66-1 before the off, but didn't look like it when he shot 14 lengths clear of Halcon Genelardais at the end of the race. This win marks the biggest ever success for trainer Sean Curran.
Sean Curran who is still a licensed jockey with over a hundred wins to his name, has only been training at Grey Fox Stables in Oxfordshire for 18 months. With Iris De Balme's astonishing win, he is now looking at entering him to next year's Grand National at Aintree. They did enter him 2 years ago, but he was rated so low that they took him out. Curran says that they will obviously take each race as it comes, but with the jump up in ratings they'll at least get a look-in at those level of races now.
Curran said that this win is huge for everyone working at Grey Fox Stables. He is hoping that it will put them on the map. He said just having a horse in a high-profile race like this is an achievement, but to actually win the race is utterly incredible.
