Investec Classic a Jamaican Dream Come True -11-05-08

November 5 - A horse race that Cape Town-based horseracing fans look forward to each year is the 1400m Investec Cape Classic (Gr 3) which is run over turf at Kenilworth Race Course, one of South Africa's premier thoroughbred racing venues, which was won last Sunday by bay colt, Jamaican Dream.

What made this year's R200,000 Investec Cape Classic so exciting was its strong 12-horse field, with three-year-olds both South Africa and abroad. At the starting gate were amongst others Australian entries Le Drakkar and Flying West - ridden by local champion jockey Anton Marcus - and Brazil's Volpista.

And once the race got underway it was talented local runner Chief Blackfoot who fought his way to the front, with a slight lead over Kings Cross who in turn was leading Flying West and Jamaican Dream around the course. Bringing up the rear of the field - at a decent pace - were Drakkar and Volpista.

By the straight, however, it was Jamaican Dream and Flying West who seemed to turn up their turbos as they pulled ahead of the rest of the field, gunning it towards the finish. In one of his best rides in recent memory, jockey Karl Neisius managed squeeze yet more power out of Jamaican Dream to cross the line first.

Flying West held on to secure second place while Le Drakkar crossed the line in third showcasing the talents of the Aussie visitors. As impressed as the Kenilworth crowd were with Jamaican Dream's top-notch victory, they were equally generous in their praise for Marcus' run who lost his crop during the race.

Jamaican Dream's win was well-deserved judging by his performances in his previous three outings, and will certainly be a contender to watch out for in South African horseracing in the future. Owned by Mrs S Plattner, Jamaican Dream is by Lizard Island (AUS) out of Ember Dream (SAF) by Flaming Rock (IRE).

Said Jamaican Dream trainer Brett Crawford, 'I am obviously very pleased with the way Jamaican Dream at Kenilworth and am looking forward to seeing some big things from him in the future.'
