International Jockeys Challenge Betting Preview - Turffontein
Author: Marc Weinberg
November 8 - South African horse racing fans should definitely head out to Turffontein on November 11, and Kenilworth on November 13 to see the country's best jockeys take on a very strong International team.
There is no Frankie Dettori or Kieren Fallon this year but the team has depth and the presence of Richard Hughes, Tom Queally, Olivier Peslier, and Jamie Spencer should be a big draw card if the powers that be manage to market the event correctly.
The rest of the International team is comprised of Andrash Starke, who has racked up many big wins in Germany, and Jimmy Fortune, who could provide a lot of value as he is one of the strongest riders in the UK especially in tough handicap races.
The South African jockeys have a huge edge as they are far more familiar with the horses and the courses, and the team also features several world-class riders in Anton Marcus, Piere Strydom, Musi Yeni, Anthony Delpech, Felix Coetzee, and Weichong Marwing.
If you're going to bet on the overall outcome of the challenge then your money has to be on the SA team. Here are our free horse racing tips for the Turffontein card:
RACE 3 - SIMPLY BLUE
EUROPA POINT looks the likely favourite and deserves her place at the top of the betting board, however, she has to overcome a very wide draw (she will jump from 12 of 12) and I am wary of this being her second run after a rest. My preference is for Simply Blue, a consistent filly who could well turn the tables with the favourite. Last time out she was beaten just over 2 lengths, but is now 2kgs better off and has a good draw. With Coetzee in the irons she could be the right one. Also include AUTUMN MIST in all Exotics. The lightly raced daughter of Western Winter should continue to improve.
RACE 4 - SELBORNE SUPREMACY
Jimmy Fortune should get his first winner of the Challenge here. Biggest dangers are front-running WILDEST DREAM and the consistent EASTERN COBBLER.
RACE 7 - FOURTH ESTATE
This is a competitive race and an upset could be on the cards. I like Fourth Estate as he gets his regular rider in Musi Yeni, and that could be a big advantage. Yeni also relishes riding in this event and is a danger man under the Turffontein lights. Good betting value for sure.
RACE 8 - ACE OF HEARTS
This race shapes up really well for this game 7-year-old gelding, who is always a trier. This is his preferred track and distance, and once again we should get a very generous price on the selection.
RACE 9 - DANCE ALLEY
This one is my best bet on the card. There was an attempted betting coup the first time she raced when her odds went from 25/1 in to 7/1. She had 6 lengths to make up with 400m to go and closed strongly to finish under 2 lengths behind in 3rd. That was an excellent debut. She will know more about tonight and the extra 200m will suit. She should win here.
