IHFA Announces World Thoroughbred Rankings - 05-27-09
May 27 - Recently the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IHFA), which is based in France, announced its May 2009 World Thoroughbred Rankings, which lists the top race horses from around the world, and the top spot went to American-bred runner Gladiatorus, who is based in the UAE.
The IHFA's current rankings cover the period November 1, 2008 to May 17, 2009, and reflect those thoroughbreds that have excelled in horseracing. Each set of World Thoroughbred Rankings is compiled by a panel of respected racing secretaries and experienced handicappers that are affiliated with the IHFA.
Horses that make the list must all have run during the calendar year, as well as achieved a rating of 115 or higher as assigned by the World Thoroughbred Rankings Conference. They are also rated according to a comprehensive set of criteria designed to distinguish the those horses that are the 'cream of the crop'.
Three senior World Rankings Supervisory Committee members include Nigel Gray, Head of Handicapping and Race Planning at Hong Kong Jockey Club; Garry O'Gorman, Senior Flat Handicapper at the Irish Turf Club; and Tom Robbins, Vice President of Racing at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in the U.S.
Trained by M. bin Shafya, 4-year-old colt Gladiatorus (127) most recently notched up a magnificent victory in the lucrative and prestigious Dubai Duty Free in March this year in Dubai, as well as many other notable victories. USA-bred and Hong Kong-trained 7-year-old gelding Good Ba Ba (124) came next.
He was followed by USA-bred and trained 5-year-old gelding Well Armed (124), who is trained by E.G. Harty and is considered the world's best 'dirt' horse, impressed with his turn-of-foot in this year's Dubai World Cup. Next came GB-bred Eagle Mountain (122), based in Dubai and trained by Mike de Kock.
