Horse Racing Industry Booming In The UK - 02-05-08

February 5 ? People who follow the markets would be the first to say that the past few months have been generally dismal. Not so in horse racing quarters. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is pleased to announce a fair amount of growth over the 2006-2007 time period, saying that the industry which happens to be the largest employer amongst sports is in fine health.

The BHA reports that not only has the amount of registered racing horse owners gone up by 2.4 percent, the number of race horses has gone up by 4 percent (this means 2000 more horses currently being trained than before). Attendance figures have remained stable for both 2006 and 2007 at around 5.9 million.

Prize money is lower though, dropping down from £104 million to £98.7 million.

The Levy Board has cut their contribution to horse racing prize-monies by £8.7 million (leading to a drop of about £5.4 million in total prize money) which has led to racecourses having to fork out money from their own coffers for the prizes.

Talking of money, financials are going to be a hot topic for jockeys this year. Currently, jockeys are all paid the same base rate regardless of the level they are on. Josh Apiafi from the Jockey's Association feels that there should be different economic bands; saying that a champion jockey should be getting more than a jockey who wins only a couple of races a season.

He is not saying that the less successful jockeys should be paid less though, just that the champs should get an increase. This may not suit the owners, but Apiafi has certainly started a raging debate.
