Horse Racing History Made By Edgar Prado - 02-11-08
February 11 - In the history of American horse racing only sixteen jockeys have managed to ride 6,000 winners. Edgar Prado is the latest rider to complete the remarkable feat and he's clearly not done yet.
Prado rode number 6,000 on Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The horse was Sumphin who is trained by Tom Albertrani. Prado also rode his 5,000th winner at the same racetrack, and there is probably no better jockey at Gulfstream these days.
Edgar Prado is from Peru and began his racing career there where he was the champion bug boy. He moved to the USA in 1986 and was Maryland's leading rider for over ten years. He dominated at Pimlico and Laurel Park before tsaking on the ultra-competitive New York scene.
Prado was the Eclipse award winner for 2006, and that was the year he shot to national and international prominence as the rider of the ill-fated champion Barbaro. He won the Kentucky Derby that year and rates that ride as the undisputed highlight of an excellent career.
Prado is 40 years old and in our opinion he is easily one of the top five jockeys currently riding in America.
