Horse Of The Meeting Is Scrappy Roo - 04-10-08
April 10 - Scrappy Roo is anything but scrappy if his numerous awards are anything to go by. The five-year-old was named Horse of the Meeting at the Sam Houston Race Park thoroughbred horse meet and received the Champion Texas bred award, the Turf Horse award as well as the Champion Colt of the Meet award.
Scrappy Roo won every one of his five starts and ended up his run of victories with a win in the Grade III John B Connally Turf Cup on the last night of the meet. This win was the first win in a graded stakes race for his trainer John Locke. His breeder, David Taylor still can't believe how far Scrappy Roo has come.
Under a year ago the colt raced off down a country road, jumped a fence and ended up cutting himself on barbed wire. In fact he cut his back leg right down to the bone and he arrived at Remington Park in really bad shape. Trainer Roger Engel gave Scrappy Roo daily treatments for a 3 month period and he regained his health completely. When he started racing again, he won 2 out of his 5 starts, but when Engel declined to send him to Sam Houston Race Park for the 2007-08 season, Taylor decided to transfer Scrappy Roo to Locke instead but insists that if Roger hadn't stepped in, Scrappy Roo would most likely never have run again.
Scrappy Roo has now been moved to Lone Star Park.
