History |
Vancouver's earliest horse races took
place in 1889 along Howe Street which was in the very middle of the
city. Due to the huge popularity of the contests taking place there, a
few horsemen created the British Columbia Jockey Club and soon a better
track rose from the dirt and was known as the East Park racetrack. The
name was changed to Hastings racecourse soon after and is now owned
solely by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation.
In 1947 the Giant Dipper was torn down to make space for a much
better 5 and a half furlong Hastings racecourse.
The Hastings Racecourse has lovely mountain and water views
making it one of the more picturesque racecourses in North America. |

Facilities |
In 1965 a much improved grandstand was built and the track
surface was refinished. In 1968 floodlights were installed to enable
night racing and in 1976 they built on to create the grandstand as it is
known today. The massive tiered grandstand allow for impeccable views of
the racing, whilst simulcast TV monitors show horse racing live from
around the world. There are an abundance of slot machines on the floor,
with 3 top class restaurants as well as concession stands on site.
They have a free shuttle service running from local malls and
other destinations to the racecourse 2 hourly (schedules subject to
change). |
