Gulfstream Park

Gulfstream Park Racecourse

History

Gulfstream Park racecourse is one of the most important thoroughbred horsing venues in the United States.

It was opened in February 1939 and the inaugural 4-day meeting attracted a crowd of 18 000. The very first Gulfstream Park Handicap was run in 1946, and the Florida Derby had its initial race in 1952. The clubhouse was built in that same year, and the grandstand seating capacity was enlarged.

In 1961 the world's largest (at the time) totalisator was installed at Gulfstream Park.

Gulfstream Park has been a venue for many a concert with performances being held on the grounds.

Facilities

The original track consisted of a dirt oval of 1 mile long and a 1400m turf oval. Renovations took place in 1982 and 1984 and in 1986 the racetrack was refurbished and the Gulfdome was added. Gulfstream Park hosted the Breeders Cup in 1989, 1992 and 1999. The current track is made up of a 1 1/8m long dirt course and a mile long turf course. The length of the turf course can be modified depending on the race of the day due to a removable rail which can be placed on either the inside or the outside of the track.

The course seat capacity is 16627.

In 2004 the grandstand and clubhouse underwent a $130m renovation. The introduction of slot machines to the premises was approved in that same year, but in 2006 when the new 'racino' first opened its doors, many race goers and commentators criticized the changes saying that the atmosphere had be ruined.
