Great Australian Trainer One Shy of 700 Winners - 06-07-08

June 7 - Mention the name of Bart Cummings in Australian horseracing circles, and indeed further afield, and you'll hear the words 'legend', 'maestro' and 'top class' over and over again, which is well-deserved praise for a trainer that has 699 stakes winners to his name.

Spanning a 60-year career, Cummings, can boast 699 Group or Listed wins, 249 Group 1 wins and 30 Derby wins, a massive achievement that has made the Australian racehorse trainer a much admired and respected figure in the sport, and a Hall of Fame honoree.

Later today at Eagle Farm Racecourse, the 'Godfather' of Aussie trainers will be gunning for his 700th stakes winner, although judging by his cool and collected demeanor, you would be forgiven for thinking that numbers don't mean that much to Cummings these days.

In the highly-anticipated $500,000 Queensland Derby (2400m) this afternoon, Cummings could well enjoy his 31st Derby thanks to his entry, Moatize, while his hopes of a winning his 250th Group 1 race rest with Swick, in the $1million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

However, of all his Derby wins, the horseracing legend has only had two previous Queensland Derby successes. The first was with Bottled Sunshine in 1975, and the second with Empires Choice last year. However as a $3.10 early favorite, Moatize is in with a chance.

Only one other Australian racehorse trainer is mentioned in the same breathe as Cummings, and that is his former rival, the late great Tommy Smith. Smith still holds the world record for the most races won. These include 824 stakes races, 282 Group 1 events, and 35 Derbies.
