Grand National Fatal For McKelvey - 04-08-08
April 8 - McKelvey who was running only his third race after a tendon injury he sustained at Aintree last year, had to be put down after he injured himself at the 20th obstacle of the 2008 Grand National.
He sustained his irreparable injury when he had unseated his rider, and was running around loose and ran into a post. Peter Brown, McKelvey's trainer is devastated by his loss and denies that McKelvey was not ready to return to racing.
Animal Rights activists have implied that it was due to negligence that McKelvey sustained his injuries, whilst others said that McKelvey was not fit enough to run such a grueling race. Others said that races such as the Grand National should be scrapped altogether. Contrary to the other animal rights organizations, the RSPCA said that conditions at the Grand National had improved drastically over the past 8 years and that equine deaths and injuries had been hugely reduced.
A spokesperson for Brown said that McKelvey's injury could have happened to any horse on any course.
McKelvey, who was the main subject in a reality BBC series that chronicled his return to health was said to be fit and well. The spokesman said that McKelvey was probably in better condition than he had ever been and that the fatal accident had nothing to do with the injury he sustained last year. He added that the Bowen family were finding the accusations from the animal rights groups incredibly distressing.
