Golden Slipper Stakes |
The Golden Slipper Stakes is a Gr 1 Australian horserace for
two-year-old thoroughbreds over 1200m at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse
in Sydney in the beginning of April. With a purse of AUD$3.5
million, the Golden Slipper Stakes is the wealthiest and most
coveted horse race in the world for two-year-olds.
As such, it's one of Australia's most popular and prestigious
events, and one that always attracts large crowds of horseracing
fans to Rosehill Gardens each year. Inaugurated in 1957, the Golden
Slipper Stakes has a long and rich heritage, and has always
attracted many of Australia's best horses, riders and trainers.
For instance, top Australian trainer T. J. Smith won the Golden
Slipper Stakes a record six times, while legendary trainer Bart
Cummings, along with Lee Freedman, and Clarry Conners, have each won
the race four times. Jockeys Ron Quinton and Shane Dye have each won
the race a record four times.
The 2009 running of the Golden Slipper Stakes was the first time in
the race's history that it was held on the first Saturday of April.
Before that, it had always traditionally been raced on the Saturday
before Good Friday as part of the popular Golden Slipper Carnival.
Stand out Golden Slipper Stakes winners over the years include 1960
winner Sky High, 1967 winner Storm Queen, 1970 winner Baguette, 1978
winner Manikato, 1985 winner Rory's Jester, 2006 winner Miss Finland
and 2008 winner Sebring. Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Sebring also won
the 2008 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (Gr 1). |
