Gaultier Can Win Golden Horse Casino Sprint - 05-29-09
May 29 - Tomorrow's 1200m Golden Horse Casino Sprint (Gr 1) at Scottsville Racecourse in Durban, South Africa is expected to be an exhilarating affair, given that the open turf race has drawn a talented field, including Gaultier and Blue Tiger, who have been entered by top local trainer, Mike Bass.
While many punters were disappointed when early race favorite Warm Warm Night was scratched from the R600,000 (USD$74,000) race earlier this week, there are still many reputable runners worth backing. And 4-year-old gelding Gaultier and 4-year-old colt Blue Tiger deserve to be at the top of the list.
In the recent Merchant Stakes (Gr 2) at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town, Gaultier pipped his stable mate to cross the line first. However, Blue Tiger got his revenge when he turned the tables on Gaultier in the Diadem Stakes (Gr 2), snatching the win. As such, their rivalry bodes well for Saturday's race.
And despite the fact that both thoroughbreds were narrowly beaten by top runner Rebel King in the Cape Flying Championship (Gr 1) not too long ago, both showed a tremendous amount of pace and stamina. If one is slightly weaker than the other, it must be Blue Tiger who is sometimes temperamental.
Another runner to watch in the Golden Horse Casino Sprint is 5-year-old gelding Centaur, who has also shown a sharp turn of foot in previous outings. Trained by international renowned trainer Mike de Kock, Centaur has not raced since he finished a notable second to JJ The Jet Plane more than a year ago.
But despite being out for so long, Centaur is reportedly in top form and, under the guidance of his canny trainer, should well be worth a wager. In addition, he'll be carrying 1.5kg less this year than when he took on the unstoppable JJ. So given tomorrow's field, he could pull a long-awaited win out of the bag.
Other Golden Horse Casino Sprint entrants include Thunder Key, Target Acquired, Extinct, Earl Of Surrey, Lucky Boy, Combat Leader, Wethreekings, Pegasus Emblem and Alvaro. Alvaro proved himself when he won the Winter Classic, and finished a not-too-shabby third to Pocket Power in a later race.
