Jockey Profile |
Gary Stevens |
Gary Stevens was born on the 6th of March 1963 in Idaho.
Stevens suffered from Perthes Syndrome - a degenerative disease of the hip and had to wear a brace from the age of 19 months. When he was 7 years old he started working for his father, Ron, who was a horse trainer, and he was a groom by the age of 8. Stevens was riding American Quarter horses at the age of 14.
He is a high school dropout, leaving to become a jockey permanently. In his first start at Les Bois Park he was a winner and moving on, he soon became a top rider in Washington state.

| Stevens has won both the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Derby 3 times, the Preakness Stakes twice and the Santa Anita Derby a record-breaking 9 times. He has won the Breeders Cup 8 times which makes him fourth from the top in the history of the race. His mounts amassed over $221 million in stakes earned and he ended his career with 4888 wins. Stevens retired in November 2005. Gary L Stevens is still the youngest jockey ever to exceed $100 million in earnings. He came agonizingly close to winning the Triple Crown aboard Silver Charm. The very next year he then denied Real Quiet's bid for the Triple Crown when he rode Victory Gallop to a memorable win in the Belmont. |
