Fuisse Wins Prix du Moulin de Longchamp in Upset - 09-07-10
September 7 - Although Sunday's prestigious Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr 1) in Paris, France only drew six runners, it was the unlikeliest of the six, Fuisse, a long shot and pre-race nuisance, who romped home first in the 1 mile turf race.
For the majority of racegoers at Longchamp Racecourse that day, race favorite Paco Boy was the obvious horse to back in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, arguably one of France's most prestigious Gr 1 races for three-year-olds and upward.
However, due to the very nature of horse racing, races don't always go to plan and the 2010 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp was no exception. From the start the crowd knew who Fuisse was, after he unseated his jockey on the way to the post.
Thankfully Fuisse's jockey, Stephane Pasquier, was uninjured in the incident, but it took Longchamp workers some time to capture Fuisse who was running loose, calm him down and remount his jockey, delaying the notable race by 15 minutes.
So when it came time to start the race, racegoers were no doubt fed up with Fuisse and expected him to fade fast given his earlier shenanigans. And they were not disappointed, as Siyouni snatched an early lead while Fuisse trailed in last place.
The order stayed pretty much the same until the last furlong and half when Siyouni sped up closely followed by Rio de la Plata. Paco Boy attempted to sneak through on the inside, but lacked the 'oomph' he had displayed in previous outings.
Fuisse, meanwhile, was steadily moving up the field on the outside until 100 yards out, it all came down to a duel between him and Rio de la Plata. And as the duo thundered towards the line, they were neck and neck until finally Fuisse prevailed.
A four-year-old, Fuisse (FR) completed the 2010 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp in 1.37.83s, with Rio De La Plata (USA) in second, Siyouni (FR) in third, Paco Boy (IRE) in fourth, Lope De Vega (IRE) in fifth and Via Medici (IRE) in sixth.
