Freddie Head Wins Breeders Cup Mile With Goldikova - 10-27-08
October 27 - Last weekend in California, diminutive Frenchman Freddie Head made Breeders' Cup history as the first person to win a coveted Breeders' Cup race as both a trainer and a jockey after Goldikova won the Breeders Cup Mile - two lengths ahead of defending Breeders' Cup Mile champion, Kip Deville.
This was Head's third Breeders' Cup Mile victory. In 1987 and 1988 Head won the Breeders' Cup Mile aboard talented champion thoroughbred filly Miesque, showing off his skills as a jockey aboard arguably the best filly of her generation.
From the start of this year's Breeders' Cup Mile, the pace was steady and the real jostling for position only started going into the far turn. Impressive mare Precious Kitten stepped up first with a burst of speed to chase down the pacesetters. Not far behind was Kip Deville who rated well throughout.
Drawing closer to the finish Olivier Peslier was going well alongside Goldikova. One of the race leaders - Thorn Song - soon grew tired and dropped back giving Pesiler the chance he was waiting for despite being temporarily boxed in by Precious Kitten and Daytona, and Kip Deville looking strong on the outside.
Seeing a slight gap, however, Peslier deftly maneuvered Goldikova between Daytona and Precious Kitten to get alongside Kip Deville and then the filly exploded into action leaving the rest of the field standing still by comparison. It was the most notable effort of the entire meeting.
Next after Kip Deville in second place came the late-running Whatsthescript in third, who just managed to relegate the quick-tiring Precious Kitten into fourth place. Goldikova completed the 2008 Breeders' Cup Mile in a not-too-shabby time of 1:33.40, and paid punters (wise enough to bet on her to win) $5.60.
Said an ecstatic Head after the race, 'I am still in shock. It's something you just can't imagine. The horseracing world has been very good to me. When people talk about exceptional Breeders' Cup Mile champions they often bring up Miesque. I honestly think that Goldikova could turn out to be just as good.'
As if echoing Head's sentiment, Goldikova's owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer are reportedly keen to keep the filly racing in 2009 which means she will more than likely be given the opportunity to defend her Breeders' Cup Mile title next year under the winning guidance of her talented trainer, the former jockey.
