June 02 - If Frankie Dettori wins the Epsom Derby later today on Authorized it will be an enormous betting coup that will leave bookies millions of pounds in the red. Dettori has never won the Derby, and punters are betting he breaks his duck here.

Frankie Dettori is 36 and has won every other Classic on more than one occasion, but winning the Vodafone Derby has eluded him in fourteen previous attempts. Authorized has to represent his best chance yet, and will start the race as a short priced odd on favourite.

Frankie Dettori is the darling of horseplayers around the world, and many will bet on him regardless of the horse he rides. In the past he has rewarded his followers handsomely. Once at Ascot (eleven years ago) he rode every winner on the card, seven races in all!

Bookmakers will whisper prayers that his Derby jinx holds for one more year since it is estimated that they will lose 40 million pounds if Authorized wins the race. One bookie reckoned that 3 out of every 4 Derby wagers were on Authorized.

Odds-on favourites have a poor record in recent editions of the Derby - the last big favourite to win the race was the ill-fated Shergar and that was in 1981.
