| Frank H. Stronach was born in
1932 in a small town in Austria to a working class family. At 22 he
moved to Montreal in Canada where two years later he started his own
manufacturing business. Over the years he built the business into Magna
International Ltd, a highly successful auto supplier.
Along the way, Frank Stronach developed a passion for thoroughbred
horseracing and founded Magna Entertainment Corporation (MEC). MEC owns
and operates some of the most successful horseracing venues in Austria
and the United States, including Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park,
Pimlico Race Course, Laurel Park, Golden Gate Fields, Thistledown, and
Portland Meadows.
The company operates off-track betting facilities as well as a national
account wagering operation called XpressBet. Via XpressBet, horseracing
fans can wager telephonically or via the Internet on races at more than
100 North American horse racing venues as well as on races in South
Africa, Australia and Dubai.
MEC also owns a host of successful thoroughbreds. One of the most famous
of these is Glorious Song who in 1980 was awarded the coveted Sovereign
Award for Canadian Horse of the Year.
