Four Days To Go Until Golden Slipper Stakes! - 04-15-08
April 15 - The race is on! Who is going to win Sydney's richest horse race on April 19th? Both Sidereus and Over The Wicket have been named as strong contenders for the Golden Slipper Stakes, but the race still looks wide open.
The purse is A$3.5m and the race will be run at Rosehill Gardens.
Sidereus, who is trained by Anthony Cummings, had to fight very hard to beat Gary Portelli's Over The Wicket at the Darley Stakes on Saturday. Larry Cassidy, Sidereus' jockey says that he has always thought that Sidereus has a genuinely good chance at taking the Slipper. Over The Wicket will be getting a new jockey for the race as his usual rider, Peter Robl has been suspended. Two possible candidates are Zac Purton and Steven Arnold.
Peter Snowden said though he wanted to see how Portillo did in the Magic Night Stakes before confirming that she would start at the race, she caught Sugar Babe at the finish and she too has earned her place in the Golden Slipper.
Lee Freedman is relived that Sugar Babe managed to force her way into the race with her second place after she took up the unfamiliar position as pacemaker at the Magic Night Stakes. She is better known as a backmarker, but Damien Oliver took her to the front after she jumped superbly.
The Golden Slipper is a race for 2-year-olds and past winners include Dance Hero and Belle Du Jour. Last year's winner was Forensics.
Our tip to win it all is SUGAR BABE - as you cannot go wrong with the combination of Freedman and Oliver in this spot. We look for her to improve significantly from her last start and she could be excellent each-way value on the day.
