Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes

The Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes is an American Grade 1 flat 1 1/4 mile turf horserace for thoroughbred three-year-old and older fillies and mares. It is run each year at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York and offers a lucrative $600,000 purse.
Inaugurated in 1978, the first-ever winner of the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes was Waya, ridden by legendary Puerto Rican-born jockey, Angel Cordero Jr. The race was named after Flower Bowl, dam of National Museum of Racing and Hall of Famer Bowl of Flowers (who was sired by Sailor, the winner of the Pimlico Special in 1955).
The Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes is considered a major preliminary race for the prestigious weight-for-age Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (for fillies and mares three-years-old and up), which is run on a different turf track in the United States in October each year.
In its 30 year history, the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes has never been won more than once by the same horse but it has yielded some great runners including Colstar, who claimed victories in the 1999 Martha Washington Stakes, the 2000 Gallorette Handicap, the 2000 and 2001 Locust Grove Handicap and the 2001 All Along Stakes.
The most times the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes has been won by a single jockey is four by Jean-Luc Samyn who - widely considered one of America's best turf jockeys - proved victorious in the race in 1985 on Dismasted, in 1992 on Christiecat, in 1993 on Far Out Beast and in 2000 on Colstar. |
