Favourite Will Not Run In 2000 Guineas - 05-03-07
May 03 - In the perfect example as to why antepost betting in horse racing is inherently risky, Teofilo was pulled from the 2000 Guineas final field earlier today. The hot favourite got a little too hot for comfort after a morning work out and his connections have deciced to scratch him from the big race.
Teofilo was all the rage in the betting for the first Classic race of the season, sponsored by Stan James bookmakers, but at the final declaration stage for the race his nomination was withdrawn. It's a huge and sickening blow to many punters, but it also comes as no surprise to those following the market for this race.
Two weeks ago it was rumoured that Teofilo would not run and his price soared. Betting was temporarily suspended until Bolger, the trainer of the horse, made a public statement that all was well with the favourite. Now it transpires that Teofilo's health concerns first flared up a fortnight ago, so the whispers back then were right on the money.
The race is wide open in Teofilo's absence with Adagio the new ruling favourite in the latest betting at 3-1. Online sports betting exchange Betfair has once again suspended antepost betting on the race. With more than 600,000 pounds wagered there alone one senses that the decision not to run Teofilo will have gutted many a horseplayer out there.
