Eight Belles Euthanised After Kentucky Derby - 05-04-08
May 4 - Eight Belles, who astonished betters by finishing second at the Kentucky Derby, had to be euthanised soon after the race because she had broken both her front ankles immediately after the end of the race.
She had shown no sign of stress during the race, and trackside vet, Larry Bramlage said that there was nothing they could have done to save her. He said that it was very strange that she broke both on the same stride and there was absolutely no warning that something was wrong. She began showing stress when slowing down and she collapsed after crossing the finishing line.
Larry Jones, Eight Belles trainer had made the decision earlier on in the week to remove her from the fillies Kentucky Oaks and entered her in the Derby instead even though she had never raced further than 1 and 1/16th of a mile in her previous 9 starts. Since the inception of the Kentucky Derby only 3 fillies have won, but Bramlage doesn't feel that having to compete with colts had anything to do with her untimely demise. He said "Fillies race against colts on an intermittent basis and it's not like we see this as routine. In fact, I've never seen it before."
The big winner of the race was Big Brown. This win gives the 3-year-old colt the first win in the elusive Triple Crown. He was 3-1 favourite for the Kentucky Derby, and bookmakers are expecting him to be odd- on favorite once again for the Preakness Stakes. This was jockey Kent Desormeaux's third Derby win and he will be hard to stop at Pimlico.
