Durban July Handicap Defending Champ Out - 07-08-10

July 8 - With just over three weeks to go before the Durban July Handicap (Gr 1), South Africa's greatest horse race, racing fans were disappointed to learn that defending champ, Big City Life, will miss the race due to injury.

According to reports, Big City Life - who likely would have started as the favourite following his great win in the R750,000 Rising Sun Gold Challenge (Gr 1) in Cape Town last month - injured himself coming off a gallop last week.

His connections confirmed that he 'stepped awkwardly' which resulted in the injury. So now South African betting fans will have to go back to the drawing board to decide who will likely win the 2200m race on Saturday, July 31.

The deadline for first acceptances is today (Thursday, July 8) , while the final field will be announced on Thursday, July 15. Here are the nominations (with their assigned weights) for the 2010 Durban July Handicap at Greyville Racecourse.
