Dubai Duty Free Hopefuls Debut At Carnival - 02-03-08

February 3 - The leading lights for the 2008 Dubai World Cup meeting are generally blooded in the series of race meetings leading up to the big day, collectively known as the Dubai International Racing Carnival. Thursday will see the third meeting in the series and will feature the local debut of Jay Peg, who is prepping for the Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night, a $5 million race in its own right.

The first meeting saw a big run from Happy Boy who did his chances of appearing in the World Cup a power of good. The previous meeting saw the victorious reappearance of Asiatic Boy, the Mike de Kock trained horse who swept all before him as a three year old in Dubai only to fall short in a poorly managed English campaign later in the season (poorly managed because this is a horse who should be running on dirt in North America, not on heavy turf at Ascot - but hey, that's just our opinion).

This week's meeting has another South African connection as Herman Brown will introduce Jay Peg to Dubai racing fans. Jay Peg was the best three year old in SA last year, but one must qualify that statement with the caveat that crop was not stellar overall. Nevertheless, the horse is a legitimate Group 1 winner, was highly regarded by his former trainer Basil Marcus, and is being pointed to the Duty Free in March.

Herman Brown has done this all before with the excellent horse Linngari, who is also expected to run on Dubai World Cup night. In 2006 Linngari won his prep race in the Carnival series and then went on to capture the Duty Free. We don't feel that Jay Peg is quite in that league, but he should be a threat.
