Also known as the Town Moor racecourse, Doncaster racecourse is one of the oldest racecourses in Great Britain. Racing records for the venue go back to the 16th century. At that time there was no structured course, and parliament actually tried to close down the races that took place there due to the amount of hooliganism that occurred. They wisely admitted defeat in 1614, and plotted out the permanent racecourse.

The world's oldest classic race is run at Doncaster. The St. Leger Stakes, founded by Colonel Anthony St Leger was run for the first time in 1776.

The racecourse was closed during the First World War when it was used by the military, however racing continued at Newmarket. Since that time, racing has continued unabated.

The approximately 1 mile in length racetrack at Doncaster is left-handed and pear-shaped. Both Flat racing and National Hunt races are accommodated here.

A ?32 million redevelopment project was completed at Doncaster, making it one of the most state-of-the-art facilities in Europe. A 5-story grandstand is one of the new additions, along with exhibition and conference facilities. There are a number of restaurants, pubs and private boxes available at Doncaster all of which have excellent views over the race track.

Further developments in the pipeline include a 125 room 4-star hotel which is due for completion sometime in 2008.
