Disgraced Racing Victoria Chief Forced To Resign - 02-19-08
February 19 - Horse racing Victoria chief, Stephen Allanson has been caught out placing bets using the name of Jack Hinden, the name of a South African war hero, as an alias.
A racing official warned him that he faced getting caught if he continued his activities; he however ignored the warnings and his betting was discovered by a random telephone audit of credit betting with bookmakers. He was caught when a monitor listening to the phone calls recognized his voice.
It was this discovery which led to his resignation last week.
Des Gleeson, director of integrity services for Racing Victoria said that they were looking into bets placed before January 2007 as well as although Allanson said he had placed only 5 bets with the bookmakers, it has so far come to light that there were 42 bets placed under the nom de plume of Jack Hinden, 37 of which have been positively attributed to Allanson.
Gleeson was not prepared to comment any further into the investigation of Stephen Allanson, but did say that he felt cheated by the man he considered to be his friend as well as a colleague and boss.
The previous board of Racing Victoria has come under sharp criticism for not having performed a more in-depth check into the background of Allanson before placing him in the top position.
