History |
Founding members of the Del Mar racetrack which opened in 1937 were Bing
Crosby and Charles S Howard. In 1938 the racecourse hosted the first
ever thoroughbred horse race that was broadcast live by NBC radio. This
match was the famous race that took place between champions Seabiscuit
and Ligaroti. Seabiscuit won the race by only a nose in front of a
record breaking crowd and ensured the success of the newly opened
racecourse.
Del Mar closed down for a couple of years because of the Second
World War, but was open for racing by 1945. In 1946, the Bing Crosby
Handicap was run for the first time and it was in that same year that
the Sante Fe railroad opened a line direct to the racecourse from Los
Angeles. Throughout the rest of the 1940's and during the 1950's the
course offered big purses for numerous stakes races, most of which were
won by celebrated jockey, Bill Shoemaker.
The summer racing season opens at Del Mar with crowds in excess
of 40 000 filling the stands. Del Mar offers excellent racing and
continues to be one of the leading racetracks in America. |
