Trainer Profile |
David Ferraris |
David Ferraris was
born on August 18 1963 in South Africa.
Ferraris was born with a love of horses in his blood. His father,
Ormonde Ferraris, was a champion trainer of mounts such as Natural
Selection.
David Ferraris started his own career in training in 1995 when he was 32
years old. He went on to win the trainers' title in South Africa 4 times
and impressed all racing enthusiasts when he won one of South Africa's
premier horse races; the Durban July Handicap back to back in 1997 and
1998. In 2003 he moved to Hong Kong where he continued to be hugely
successful. His most notable horse is Vengeance of Rain who has won
several prestigious Hong Kong races as well as the prominent 2007 Dubai
Sheema Classic at the the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai.

The Hong Kong Jockey club went to extreme lengths to check out the
credentials of Ferraris before offering him the position. The HKJC's
director of racing Winfred Engelbrecht-Bresges said that although
Ferraris's South African record was top-class, they needed to check his
operation out first hand in his home environment and what they saw
impressed them immensely.
The HKJC felt that having
both Tony Millard and Ferraris on board, they would have greater access
to horses from South Africa. Ferraris originally turned down their
offer, but was delighted when 2 years later they asked him once again to
come on board. His initial refusal was due to his wife's pregnancy with
their second child |
