Curlin Wins Preakness Stakes 2007 - 05-19-07
May 19 - In a dramatic finish to the 2007 Preakness Stakes Curlin ran down Street Sense on the wire to win by a nose, thus ending the favorite's chance of capturing the Triple Crown.
For those of us who mortgaged the home on Curlin to win the Kentucky Derby, and by "those of us" I mean me, it was hardly any consolation at all to see Curlin run his real race at Pimlico. Street Sense and Curlin both made spectacular moves from well off the pace to tackle Hard Spun, who stayed on gamely for third.
Street Sense got first run and Borel, who has been disgustingly cocky all week long, definitely thought he had the race won. But Curlin got a superior ride from Robby Alborado, and grabbed Street Sense in the final stride.
Like all champion race horses Curlin dug deep but obviously this horse has plenty still to come and will probably go on to win the Breeders Cup Classic later this year at Monmouth Park.
Once again for all of us now living in our family car this will be a very small consolation indeed.
