Curlin Notches Prep Win For Dubai World Cup - 02-29-08
February 28 - Next month Dubai will host many of the best thoroughbred racehorses in the world in an unrivalled night of horse racing that culminates in the richest race on earth, the Dubai World Cup. The stakes on offer for that race alone total $6 million, and the 2007 Eclipse Horse Of The Year, Curlin is in town to run for the lion's share of that loot.
Curlin's Dubai campaign got off to a predictably perfect start yesterday evening when he eased past some overmatched competition to win the Jaguar Trophy Handicap. That race carried a purse of $175,000, strictly chump change for Steve Asmussen's charge who was ridden by Robby Albarado, as per usual.
Curlin has now won 7 of 10 lifetime starts with two of those defeats coming in last year's USA Triple Crown series. He was third in the Kentucky Derby, when still very green, and lost a titanic Belmont Stakes to the Todd Pletcher trained filly Rags To Riches. But the rest of 2007 belonged to Curlin as he won the Breeders' Cup Classic to add to his one Triple Crown success, the Preakness Stakes.
Curlin has already earned over $5 million in stakes to date and a victory in the 2008 Dubai World Cup would make him one of the highest earning horses in the history of the sport of kings.
