Crossthestart Wins The Beginning - 07-05-09
July 5 - Not only can Australian racehorse trainer Bevan Laming celebrate that his charge Crossthestart won the BRC The Beginning Handicap yesterday (Saturday, July 4) at Eagle Farm Racecourse, but also that the win made history as the first race under the banner of the newly formed Brisbane Racing Club.
Laming, who began training with his son Richard at the start of this season after a change in racing regulations allowed training partnerships, will go down in Brisbane horseracing history as the first winning trainer under the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC). The BRC was formed when the Brisbane Turf Club and the Queensland Turf Club merged.
With the BRC flag flying high, the 1800m BRC The Beginning Handicap kicked off the first of nine races at Eagle Farm Racecourse, a race that attracted a field of 14 runners. With respected jockey Jim Byrne aboard, Crossthestart was calm and collected out of the gate and stayed that way until he crossed the line first.
He finished 3/4 of a length clear of second place finisher, Shuffle The Cash, who was followed home in third by Malandrina. Interestingly, Crossthestart had been assigned the second highest weight of 57kg in the race. The victory was particularly sweet for the Lamings because it cemented their recent partnership.
While the senior Laming is in charge of 15 thoroughbreds at his Jacob Wells stables on the Gold Coast, the junior Laming oversees the Victorian arm of the training operation, with over 30 horses under his control. 'Crossthestart is a promising horse but has had shocking luck with barriers all his life,' said Bevan Laming.
'If he can get used to 2400m outings, he should make a handy stayer later on in his career,' he said. 'While he's got a good turn of foot, he's not seasoned enough right now for the Grafton Cup. So instead of the Grafton, I've decided to enter him in a 1600m Listed race at Eagle Farm in two weeks from now.'
In his last start, a race at Ipswich, Crossthestart managed a close victory, but more importantly ran the last 600m in the fastest time of the day, giving his trainer confidence in his chances ahead of the BRC The Beginning Handicap. 'After his Ipswich win, I thought he could win again and I was right,' said Laming.
